Shot-on-video horror films are generally considered an artistic wasteland but this is the exception to the rule. ADHV is a darkly humorous predecessor to today's "found footage" subgenre, with a AV-obsessed nebbish kidnapped by a criminal gang he stumbles upon and pressed into service to chronicle their deeds. It's all cleverly done in verite style by director Jack Perez but there's a real understanding of how to use cinematic means in a faux-documentary setting, with long takes generating tension and clever placement and timing of handheld camera moves to make us think we're seeing more than we actually see. The cast is convincing, including a post-fame/pre-reality t.v. Bonaduce and a Melora Walters, a few years before she'd break big in films like BOOGIE NIGHTS. Well worth checking out for cult/horror fans who want to be challenged by something conceptually ambitious and subtle. [© 2016 schlockmania dot com]
