I haven't finished reading the whole book but I like the history that has been captured in the book - details of the people, pictures and makes you almost feel like you were there. I like reading about the dedicated staff and the real life stories of the kids that were cared for. The Jesse Lee Home (now called AK Child & Family) still exists to this day serving kids and families. This book provides a great overview of the history and origins of such an important part of Alaskan history! Benny Benson - who created the Alaskan flag; The Jesse Lee Home, a safe haven for many Alaska Native children whose lives were turned upside down by epidemics of the Spanish Flu, TB, Diphtheria and other tragedies. Here we are in a new modern pandemic - Covid 19. As they say sometimes history does repeat itself. Interesting to see how much has changed but some things remain the same (the need for human connection, compassion, childhood antics and having a life purpose). Thankful that James Simpson took the time to share and write his story.
