I am researching emigrant life for a family history book. I have read numerous first-hand accounts. Each story is unique and adds to your understanding.Kristine's story is a story of family life and making a home. Even modern-day emigrant wives who struggle with being alone in a strange town, when they do not speak English, will relate. It is not a story about her life but rather the story of her life with all her thoughts and frustrations. The book is written by her granddaughter based on letters to Norway that relatives saved and a college project that her mother did in 1943.While the focus is making a home and a family life, Kristine was a very independent woman. She made a life for years in Norway while waiting for her fiancé to come back for her, made the trip on her own with an infant after her husband returned to his business endeavors soon after the wedding, and spent many hours learning the ropes alone while her husband built a business.The book shined, for me personally, in the story of the trip back to Norway to visit that Kristine and her daughter made. Many of the later emigrants, especially those that lived in cities and could make more disposable income, did go back to the Old Country to visit. Kristine makes you feel as if you are along for the trip. While most of us are familiar with the story of leaving the Old Country and family members behind never to be seen again, these visits were an integral part of many other emigrants' identities.
