I am a lawyer. I read fiction whenever I can to help make sense of the world of conflict in which I thrive. I ordered and received this book 20 years ago. I remember none of it. I ordered it 20 years later and will not forget any of it.On the front cover of the copy is a statement from the NY Times that this book is "arguably the funniest legal thriller ever written." Keep in mind that this 20 years before the NY Times had completely lost its sense of humor and justice.In any event, do not buy this book because it is a legal thriller. Of course, it involves crimes of high and low nature, some even against our most human impulses, and the Court room scenes are both prescient to the plot, well written, and so ungrounded in common experience that they do not ring true, but, ring as you might wish that experience to be. But this is not a legal thriller.Further, do not buy this book because its is funny. It is more than funny. It is so laugh out loud funny that I found myself not laughing for fear that the people who want to make laughter illegal in thisCountry might have come for me and put me on the list of those who shall laugh no more before the truth of the miracle tears was revealed to me in the final pages of the novel.Buy and read this book because there is something strange and wonderful about it. It is as if Richard Brautigan channeled John Grisham and decided to write a novel about why we are, and who we are, and all of the things in between, and chose a small town Judge to tell it over the light of a low fire with a baggie of pot by his side and cheap scotch in his mug. You won't be alone. There will his brother, a doctor, a friend, and a woman with miracle tears. They will want to know what you have to say and if you want a beer to help in the telling.Read this book.
