I've read several memoirs of children who were evacuated to rural neighborhoods during WWII, but this is the first one that I've read of a boy's story. The author does a great job of capturing the setting of his evacuation, as well as his psychological state. I only wish that he told us the longer-term effects of his childhood experiences (for example, after hearing about his academic experiences, I wish he had said what career path he chose as an adult, or what his relationship with his brother is like).
