Although this portrayl of F Scott Fitzgerald's story veers from the original in specific areas (such as a background of a mental hospital) the themes and excess of the video are true to the book. Most of the character casting is also better than in previous movie versions, especially for Daisy, Tom and Myrtle. The costuming was fabulous and the Valley of Ashes was very well done. It is somewhat disappointing that Gatsby's father has been dropped at the end, and that Nick doesn't confront Tom to accentuate Tom and Daisy's carelessness. But overall, it was much more enjoyable to watch and far more engaging for my students than the older versions. I showed this film at the conclusion of our Gatsby unit for English 11.
