You know for every Sam Cooke, Jackie Wilson, and Clyde McPhatter there were hundreds of other great singers who never hit the big time. Bubber Johnson falls into that category. Back in the early 80's in Valdosta,Georgia on WGOV 950 radio I did a Sunday nite R&B oldies show called "The Wax Museum". This was back in the days of vinyl lp's (cd's didn't exist). There was this record store in town that had these great King Records compilations. I think I bought every last one of em- about 6 or 7 albums total.Included on one of these various artist albums was Bubber Johnson's " Come Home". It was love at first hearing. It is one of the finest ballad performances of the 50's.The song was a top 10 smash in 1955 and is one of those forgotten classics that you will probably never hear on radio-except maybe if you ever catch my show. Bubber unfortunately proved to be a one hit wonder- for that top 10 in 1955 was his only chart entry on Billboards R&B Chart. But if I were to ever have one hit record in my life- I would hope that providence would bless me with one as beautiful and classic as this.---P.S. Bubber sounds remarkably like Jesse Belvin.
