There are writers who shy away from literary gymnastics and just jump when it's called for with no artifice. Amy Loves Dogs Hempel is, to me, this kind of writer. It was not surprising to me that she is influenced by Raymond Carver, another writer who lets me read in peace. Her stories have just the right amount of air. Her novella, Tumble Home is a life in a letter written by a 'resting' artist to an almost lover, that could only be written to one's deepest intimate. Wry and devoted, Hempel can be trusted to keep her characters honest and warm. What a great writer.
