WELCOME HOME has so many tunes that still sound fresh, save, perhaps, for the first tune. Skip that (or not!) and start with COMING UP CLOSE--the first song where Aimee Mann (bass player/ singer/ songwriter of 'Til Tuesday) started showing glimpses of the genius songwriter that would be revealed in her solo career. I've loved COMING UP CLOSE since it's release and never sickened of it. It's one of my all-time favorite songs. I covered it in NYC at least a hundred times with my friends.ON SUNDAY could easily be found on Aimee Mann's solo outing, @#$%& SMILERS or THE FORGOTTEN ARM.DAVID DENIES is another catchy tune. And WILL SHE JUST FALL DOWN has the silly-serious lyrics and wonderful melody that's Mann's trademark ("and if I don't hold her up, will she just fall down?"). So 1980s in a way, but the song is catchy; another wonderfully written pop tune.Any fan of Aimee Mann would be happy to own WELCOME HOME. Every one of my friends who bought the album when it was released still listens to it.. And COMING UP CLOSE was almost our anthem of sorts while in college in NYC. The lyrics tell a story about the singer/narrator and a guy driving around Iowa in a borrowed car. Great imagery:"There was a farmhouse that had long since been deserted,we stopped and carved our hearts into the wooden surface..."Classic Aimee Mann lyrics right there! It's a 'Til Tuesday album, for sure, but to me it's the first glimpse of Aimee Mann's genius.
