I first saw "Fun with Dick and Jane" in the theater when it was first released in the spring of 1977. I was was 21 at the time. Well I'm 64 now and I got it on DVD and I appreciate it more than ever. It stars George Segal and Jane Fonda as Dick and Jane Harper, a loving couple who live in southern California. The movie opens with Dick getting fired by his boss ,(played by Johnny Carson's longtime sidekick on The Tonight Show for 30 years ,Ed McMahon in one of his rare acting parts.) Then the fun begins. The movie was written by Jerry Belson who wrote episodes of "The Odd Couple" with the late, great Tony Randall and Jack Klugman in the early '70's. And the really funny comedy "The End" with Burt Reynolds from 1978 among others. And it was directed by Ted Kotcheff who made "North Dallas Forty" from 1979 with Nick Nolte and Mac Davis ,a really great movie about pro football. And "First Blood" with Sylvester Stallone from 1982, "Weekend at Bernie's" from 1989 among others. The flick was remade in 2005 with Jim Carrey, which I didn't see. Some taglines for the movie posters read.....(Like it was drawn by Dick and Jane's elementary school aged son,) "This is my Dad. He just got fired. This is my Mom.She can't balance the budget. This is our house. We can't afford it. This is our car. They just stole it." "A tribute to American ingenuity." And "Bonnie and Clyde they ain't."
